Hello Non-Toxic Family!

School is back in session, which means cold and flu season is not far behind. The good news is that a few simple habits now can help your whole family stay well later. This week is all about supporting your immune health the non-toxic way, from cleaner air to smarter hand washing to the supplements we actually use. Let's get into it.

LABOR DAY DEAL: 45% OFF THE LUMEBOX

This is a big one. Our favorite red light therapy device, the Lumebox, is 45 percent off for Labor Day (sale starts tomorrow, Friday, Sept 4th), the biggest discount they run all year. Red light therapy has become part of our regular routine, and the Lumebox is the one we reach for because it is portable, well-made, and third-party tested. Many people use red and near-infrared light to support skin health, muscle recovery, and better sleep, and having a quality panel at home makes it easy to stay consistent. If you have been waiting to try one, this is the sale to do it on.

Did you catch my recent reel on what those food expiration dates really mean?

Most of those dates are about quality, not safety. Manufacturers set them conservatively, so a lot of perfectly good food gets tossed every year over a printed date. Trust your eyes and your nose, store food properly, and you can reduce food waste and save money at the same time. I break it down in the reel.

Non-Toxic Tip of the Week

Support Your Family's Immune Health This Season

A strong immune system is built on daily habits, not a single magic product. Here is where we focus as the cold season ramps up.

Clean up your hand soap and skip "antibacterial": Here is something that surprises people. The FDA has said antibacterial soaps are no better than plain soap and water at preventing illness, and in 2016 it removed triclosan, a chemical linked to hormone concerns, from those soaps. Triclosan can still turn up in some hand sanitizers, toothpastes, and products labeled "antibacterial," so it is worth checking labels. Plain soap and water, used well, is all you need. Choose a simple, organic soap scented with essential oils, since synthetic fragrances are common irritants.

Read the label on your hand sanitizer: Soap and water is always the better choice, but when you do reach for a sanitizer, the ingredient list matters. Avoid the ones with synthetic fragrance, parabens, and benzalkonium chloride, and steer toward a simple clean formula.

Support little immune systems with a clean supplement: We use Llama Naturals gummies for our girls. They are made from whole fruit with no added sugar, and they are one of the only kids' brands I have found that openly share their third-party testing, which is exactly the transparency I want before giving something to my kids. My girls also happen to love them, which makes the whole thing a lot easier.

Keep your indoor air clean: As windows close for the season and everyone spends more time inside, indoor air quality starts to matter more. A good air purifier like the Jaspr Air helps filter out the particles, allergens, and germs that build up in a closed-up house. Pair it with opening a window whenever the weather still allows.

Do not skip the basics: Sleep, sunlight, whole foods, and hydration do more for immunity than anything you can buy. Get outside for morning light while it lasts, lean on protein and colorful produce, and protect bedtime. A daily spoonful of elderberry syrup is an easy bit of extra support, recipe below.

I go deeper on all of this in my latest blog post, including our full cold-season routine and the habits that make the biggest difference:

Recipe of the Week

Homemade Elderberry Syrup: An Easy Immune Recipe

Elderberry syrup is one of the oldest, simplest ways to give your immune system a little seasonal support, and making it at home means no corn syrup, no artificial dyes, and no mystery ingredients.

You simmer dried elderberries with water, a little fresh ginger, a cinnamon stick, and a few cloves, then strain it and stir in raw honey once it has cooled. That is it. A spoonful a day through the fall and winter is an easy routine for the whole family, and kids usually love the taste. Store it in a jar in the fridge and make a fresh batch every couple of weeks.

In Closing,

Staying well through the cold season is not about one miracle product. It is a handful of small, steady habits, cleaner hands, cleaner air, good sleep, real food, and a little seasonal support that chip away at the everyday toxic load your family carries while helping their bodies do what they already do well. Start with one this week and build from there. Thanks for being part of the Non-Toxic Dad community and for the practical changes that keep your family healthy all season. See you next week!

🌞 PS: Quiz Answer! 🌞

 B: No better than

This one catches a lot of people off guard. After years of review, the FDA concluded that over-the-counter antibacterial soaps are no more effective than plain soap and water at preventing illness, and that some of their ingredients raised real safety concerns. In 2016, the agency pulled triclosan and 18 other chemicals from consumer wash soaps. The catch is that the rule only covered soaps, so triclosan can still appear in some hand sanitizers, toothpastes, and household products labeled "antibacterial." The takeaway is simple and a little freeing: plain soap, warm water, and a good 20 seconds of scrubbing is the gold standard. You do not need the "antibacterial" label at all.
