As the weather turns and cold and flu season creeps back in, I want to talk about two herbs used for immune support for centuries, and backed by modern research. Rosemary and thyme aren't just for the dinner table. Both are loaded with compounds that fight bacteria, calm inflammation, and support your body's natural defenses, and you can grow both on a windowsill for almost nothing. This week I'm covering the science behind them and all the ways to actually use them.
Let's test your herb IQ this week:
Which compound in thyme has been shown in lab studies to inhibit bacteria like Staph and E. coli?
A️. Thymol
B️. Caffeine
C️. Curcumin
D. Allicin
Think you know the answer? Scroll to the bottom of this week's newsletter to see if you got it right.
Did you catch my recent reel on how rosemary can boost your brain?
| Studies show that simply smelling rosemary increases the concentration of a compound called 1,8-cineole in your bloodstream, and the higher that concentration, the faster and more accurately people complete cognitive tasks (Moss & Oliver, Therapeutic Advances in Psychopharmacology, 2012). Fill a room with the scent of rosemary, and research shows it can also improve prospective memory, meaning fewer things slip your mind and you stay more alert throughout the day. Rosemary aromatherapy has even shown benefits for cognitive function in dementia patients. |
Non-Toxic Tip of the Week
All the Ways to Use Rosemary and Thyme
Rosemary gets most of its benefits from carnosic acid and rosmarinic acid, two antioxidants with real antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal activity. Thyme's main compound, thymol, has been shown in lab studies to inhibit bacteria like Staph and E. coli, and clinical research backs it specifically for respiratory support; one study found it reduced cough frequency by up to 60 percent in bronchitis patients. Here's how I actually use both:
☐ Steep them in a stainless steel French press: Skip the plastic infuser or a mug with questionable glaze; a stainless steel French press is an easy, non-toxic way to steep a strong rosemary-thyme infusion in minutes. Press and pour, no steeping bags needed.
☐ A stainless steel tea ball for loose-leaf tea: If you're making a single cup instead of a full press, a stainless steel tea ball lets you use loose dried rosemary and thyme without the bleached paper or plastic mesh found in most tea bags.
☐ Infuse raw honey with fresh thyme: Warm raw honey gently and steep fresh thyme sprigs in it for a few hours, then strain. Thyme-infused honey combines two antimicrobial ingredients into one spoonable immune booster, especially good for a scratchy throat. Store it in a glass jar so nothing leaches into the honey over time.
☐ Crush fresh sprigs with a mortar and pestle: Lightly crushing rosemary and thyme before steeping or cooking with them ruptures the leaves and releases more of the essential oils, meaning a stronger, more therapeutic infusion than just dropping whole sprigs in water. A stainless steel or granite mortar and pestle won't absorb odors or leach the way some ceramic glazes can.
☐ Steam inhalation for congestion: Add a handful of fresh rosemary and thyme to a pot of steaming water, lean over it with a towel draped over your head, and breathe deeply for 5-10 minutes. The warm steam carries thymol and cineole straight into your sinuses and airways.
☐ A rosemary and thyme foot or bath soak: Toss a handful of fresh sprigs into a hot bath or foot soak. Or a few drops of rosemary essential oil. The warm water releases their aromatic oils, giving you calming, immune-supporting benefits topically while you relax.
☐ Keep a live plant on your windowsill: Both herbs are genuinely easy to grow indoors, and having a live plant on hand means fresh sprigs anytime you want to toss some into tea, a soak, or dinner, no grocery run required.

Recipe of the Week
Rosemary & Thyme Immune-Boosting Infusion
A simple, warming infusion that steeps both herbs together to pull out their antioxidant and antimicrobial compounds. Fresh rosemary and thyme sprigs, a squeeze of lemon, and a spoonful of raw honey, steeped hot in a stainless steel French press for 10 minutes. Drink it as-is for a daily immune boost, or sip it at the first sign of a scratchy throat.
Today's Newsletter is brought to you by Blueland, a brand I've used in my own house for a long time.
| Their laundry and dishwasher tablets are pre-measured and made without PVA/PVOH, PFAS, phosphates, or chlorine bleach, so when my 4-year-old helps me around the house, I feel good letting her pop the tablet into the washer or dishwasher. What really sold me is that Blueland is backed by more third-party certifications than any other cleaning brand, including EPA Safer Choice, and they genuinely get our dishes and laundry clean without me having to second-guess what's in them. |
Rosemary and thyme are about as simple and accessible as natural remedies get, a few sprigs, some hot water, and a little time. You don't need a cabinet full of supplements to support your immune system this season, sometimes it's just what's already growing in the garden. Thanks for being part of the Non-Toxic Dad community. See you next week!
Thymol is thyme's primary active compound, making up anywhere from 20 to 55 percent of its essential oil, and lab studies have shown it effectively inhibits the growth of bacteria including Staphylococcus aureus and E. coli. It's also the main active ingredient behind the antimicrobial effects in products like Listerine mouthwash.
