"Biohacking" can sound intimidating, like something that requires a lab and a huge budget. It does not. At its core, it just means using small, intentional habits and a few good tools to help your body do what it already does, a little better. Some of the most powerful ones are completely free. A few are worth investing in. This week, I am sharing the tried-and-true biohacks we actually use in our house, starting with the ones that cost nothing.

Did you catch my recent reel on the kids' clothing items an environmental scientist would skip at Target?
| Three to watch for: moisture-wicking activewear (often PFAS and phthalates), graphic tees printed with plastisol ink, and flame-resistant polyester sleepwear. In the reel I share the safer options right there at Target. |
Non-Toxic Tip of the Week
Our Tried-and-True Biohacking Toolkit
The best place to start is with the free habits, since they do the heaviest lifting. Then come a few tools that are worth the investment. Here is what we actually use.
☐ Catch the morning sun: This is the single most powerful free biohack there is. Getting outside for natural light within an hour of waking helps set your circadian rhythm, which supports steadier energy during the day and better sleep at night. Even five or ten minutes makes a real difference.
☐ Block blue light at night: The bright, blue-heavy light from screens and LED bulbs in the evening can suppress melatonin and make it harder to wind down. Dim the lights after sunset, switch your devices to night mode, and consider wearing blue-light-blocking glasses during evening screen time.
☐ Get grounded: Grounding, or earthing, simply means putting your bare skin in contact with the earth, whether that is grass, sand, or soil. Many people find a few minutes barefoot outside genuinely calming, and it is a free, easy excuse to slow down and get outdoors.
☐ Add a few minutes of breathwork: You carry the most powerful stress tool with you everywhere you go. A few minutes of slow, deep breathing, especially long exhales, can help downshift your nervous system, and it costs nothing. A couple of rounds before bed or in a stressful moment goes a long way.
☐ Sweat it out in a sauna: Heat exposure is a favorite recovery tool for good reason. Many people use regular sauna sessions to relax, unwind, and support recovery, and whether it is an infrared unit at home or a session at the gym, it counts.
☐ LumeBox: A clinical-grade red and near-infrared light panel small enough to hold in one hand. We use ours on sore joints, after workouts, and on skin, and because it folds right into a bag, it comes on every trip instead of sitting in a closet. Red and near-infrared light is something many people use to support recovery and skin health.
☐ WavWatch: A simple wearable that runs hundreds of preset frequency programs, with settings for everything from sleep and stress to everyday recovery. You pick a setting, wear it, and go about your day. No pills, no appointments, nothing to remember. It is one of the more experimental tools in our lineup, and we like that it is easy and non-invasive.
☐ Shielding Shop: Real EMF protection for the two places you spend the most hours, your bed and your desk. They make shielded fabrics, canopies, and covers designed to cut wireless exposure while you sleep and work. Reducing your exposure where you spend the most time is one of those steps most people never think to address, and it is an easy one to set and then forget.
You do not need all of this at once. Start with the free habits this week: morning sun, a little breathwork, lights down at night, and layer in the tools over time.
I go deeper on all of this in my latest blog post, including how we fit these habits into a normal day without letting them take over our lives:

Recipe of the Week
Ricotta Raspberry Toast: An Easy 5-Minute Breakfast
Biohacking your morning does not have to mean a joyless routine. This toast is proof. It is quick, it looks like something off a cafe menu, and it is built on real, whole-food ingredients that actually fuel you.
You start with a good slice of toasted sourdough, spread it generously with fresh ricotta, add a layer of raspberries or a spoonful of clean raspberry jam, and finish it with a scatter of fresh thyme. The ricotta brings protein and staying power, the raspberries bring natural sweetness and fiber, and the thyme makes it feel special. It comes together in about five minutes and pairs perfectly with your morning sunlight.
The truth about biohacking is that the basics matter most. Morning light, good sleep, real food, movement, and a few minutes to breathe will do more for how you feel than any gadget. The tools are there to support those habits, not replace them. Start with one free habit this week and build from there. Thanks for being part of the Non-Toxic Dad community and for the small, steady choices that add up to a healthier, more energized life. See you next week!
✅ B: Morning sunlight in your eyes soon after waking
It really is that simple, and that free. Getting natural light into your eyes soon after you wake up is one of the most reliable ways to anchor your circadian rhythm, the internal clock that governs your energy and sleep. Morning light helps cue the natural rise and fall of hormones that keep you alert during the day and sleepy at night. Five to ten minutes outside not long after waking, no sunglasses needed, is one of the highest-impact things you can do for your sleep, and it costs nothing. It is the perfect excuse to step outside with your coffee.
