Non-Toxic Dad News: May 21, 2026

Hello Non-Toxic Family!

Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial kickoff to summer: backyard BBQs, picnic tables, lake days, and gathering outside with the people you love, but it is also one of the biggest “toxic convenience” holidays of the year. Between black plastic serving utensils sitting in hot food, paper plates coated in chemicals, plastic cups baking in the sun, and coolers packed with ultra-processed snacks, a simple cookout can quickly become a chemical overload.

This week, we are sharing easy ways to upgrade your BBQs and picnics with simple, non-toxic swaps like stainless steel plates and utensils, safer food storage, cleaner grilling tools, and tips for packing a healthier picnic basket without making summer feel complicated.

🏡 NON-TOXIC SWAPS I USE EVERY DAY AS A CRUNCHY DAD

Check out this reel where I walk through some of my favorite simple non-toxic swaps I actually use every single day.

You do not have to change everything overnight. Start with one room and build from there over time. Some of my favorite everyday swaps include solid hardwood cutting boards, glass food storage, beeswax wrap, vinegar cleaning, wool dryer balls, organic bedding, stainless steel water bottles, mineral sunscreen, and avoiding hot food touching plastic whenever possible.

Non-Toxic Tip of the Week

HOW TO PACK THE PERFECT PICNIC BASKET ☀️

Most picnic baskets today are basically portable chemical kits: plastic utensils, black plastic serving spoons sitting in hot food, paper plates coated in PFAS, bottled drinks baking in the sun, synthetic bug spray, fragranced sunscreen, and ultra-processed snacks packed in plastic wrappers. The good news is that building a healthier picnic setup is actually simple once you know what to swap.

❌ Plastic utensils
✅ Stainless steel utensils or bamboo cutlery

❌ Black plastic serving spoons and spatulas
✅ Stainless steel or wooden serving utensils

❌ Disposable paper plates with grease-proof coatings
✅ Stainless steel plates or plain uncoated paper products

❌ Plastic food containers
✅ Glass containers or stainless steel lunch boxes

❌ Bottled water left in the heat
✅ Filtered water in stainless steel or glass bottles

❌ Conventional sunscreen loaded with fragrance and chemicals
✅ Mineral-based sunscreen with zinc oxide

❌ Synthetic bug sprays with harsh chemicals
✅ Natural bug spray with lemon eucalyptus, citronella, or essential oils

❌ Plastic wrap touching hot burgers and grilled foods
✅ Beeswax wrap, butcher paper, or glass storage containers

❌ Ultra-processed picnic snacks
✅ Fresh fruit, homemade meat sticks, cheese, hard-boiled eggs, sourdough sandwiches, jerky, or simple homemade treats

❌ Cheap polyester picnic blankets
✅ Cotton or wool blankets made with natural fibers

One of the easiest ways to reduce toxin exposure is simply to reduce how much hot food comes into contact with plastic during the summer months. Heat dramatically increases chemical leaching, especially in cars, coolers, picnic tables, and BBQ setups sitting in the sun all afternoon. A few thoughtful swaps can make your summer gatherings feel simpler, healthier, and honestly more nostalgic too.

Recipe of the Week

Grassfed Smashburger Picnic Boxes

This is one of those simple Memorial Day meals that somehow tastes better outside, sitting on a picnic blanket. These grass-fed smashburgers are easy to prep ahead, pack well in a cooler, and can be customized for everyone at the BBQ without relying on ultra-processed buns, plastic-wrapped sides, or mystery-ingredient condiments.

In Closing,

Summer memories are built around simple things: good food, sunshine, fresh air, and time spent with people you love. A few small swaps can dramatically reduce toxin exposure without making BBQs, picnics, or cookouts feel complicated or restrictive. Here’s to a summer filled with cleaner meals, safer gatherings, and plenty of time outside.

PS Quiz Answer: B. Black plastic serving spoon
Black plastic kitchen tools can contain flame retardants and other chemicals from recycled electronic waste that may leach into hot food. The second worst is aluminum foil, which contains aluminum, a known neurotoxin.
