Hello Non-Toxic Friends!

As the weather warms up and we spend more time outside, ticks become an unavoidable part of the conversation. Many families reach for conventional sprays and treatments without realizing that many of them contain harsh chemicals that can affect both human and pet health, especially with repeated exposure throughout the season. The good news is that there are effective ways to reduce tick risk without relying on products loaded with questionable ingredients. This week, we are breaking down simple strategies to help you avoid ticks in the first place, what to watch for in common tick sprays and pet treatments, and safer alternatives you can use with confidence. We will also share a homemade tick spray recipe and walk you through how to remove a tick safely and calmly if one does latch on.

Did you catch my recent post about frozen lemons? It’s a simple trick that can make a big difference in the kitchen. Grating frozen lemons allows you to use the whole fruit, including the peel, which is rich in beneficial plant compounds and adds a bright burst of flavor to meals and drinks. It’s an easy way to boost both nutrition and taste without any extra effort. Check out the post here to see how to do it.

Stop Squeezing Lemons: A Smarter Way to Use the Whole Fruit

Warehouse stores have made it easy to buy meat in bulk, stock a freezer, and feel like the job is done for weeks. Smart Ways to Prevent and Handle Ticks

Tick season is here, but protecting your family and pets does not have to mean reaching for chemical-heavy sprays. A few simple habits and safer alternatives can go a long way in reducing risk while keeping everyone feeling confident outdoors. Use this checklist as a quick reminder before heading out on hikes, yard work, or backyard playtime.

Your Tick-Smart Checklist:

☀️ Wear light-colored clothing
Makes it easier to spot ticks before they attach.
👖 Cover strategically
Long sleeves, long pants, and tucking pants into socks can create a physical barrier when walking in wooded or grassy areas.
🌾 Stay out of tall grasses and brush when possible
Stick to the center of trails and keep play areas well-maintained.
🔍 Do a quick tick check after being outdoors
Check behind ears, along the hairline, under arms, around the waist, behind knees, and on pets’ collars and bellies.
🧺 Change clothes and toss them in the dryer
Ten to fifteen minutes on high heat can help kill any hitchhiking ticks. If you can’t change, use a lint roller.
🐕 Check pets daily during tick season
Especially after walks, hikes, or time spent in wooded or grassy areas.

If A Tick Finds You Anyway, Here's The Protocol:

Remove it right: A Tick Key is the cleanest option, but fine-tip tweezers work too. Grab as close to the skin as possible and pull straight out with steady pressure. No twisting, no petroleum jelly, no burning. The goal is clean removal without squeezing the body.

Draw it out: Apply a drawing salve (like PRID or activated charcoal-based) to the bite site after removal. Helps pull out anything left behind and keeps the area calm.

Ledum palustre: Boiron Ledum 200CK is the homeopathic remedy long used for puncture wounds and insect bites. Many integrative practitioners recommend it after tick bites specifically. Take it promptly. Always check with your Doctor first.

Send the tick: Don't flush it. Drop it in a small zip bag and send it to Ticknology for testing. They'll identify the species and screen for pathogens, including Lyme, Bartonella, and others. Knowing what you were exposed to is half the battle.

Watch the site: A bullseye rash (erythema migrans) is the classic Lyme signal, but not everyone gets one. Watch for flu-like symptoms, fatigue, or joint pain in the weeks after. When in doubt, work with a Lyme-literate practitioner.Non-Toxic Recipe of the Week
