Non-Toxic Dad News: January 29, 2026

Hello Non-Toxic Friends!

Your laundry room might look clean, but what’s happening inside your washer, dryer, and detergent bottles matters more than most people realize. The products you use soak into your clothes, sit against your skin all day, and circulate through your home with every load. This week, we’re breaking down simple ways to make your laundry routine more non-toxic. From choosing cleaner detergents to small habits like leaving the washer door open to prevent moisture buildup, these details add up. We’ll also cover how to clean out your washer and dryer properly and when a mold-focused cleaner or spray is worth using. Let’s jump in!

What’s Happening

I recently took a rare family trip to Los Cabos, something we hadn’t done in years because most of our travel has been for work or family obligations. It felt important to carve out time just for our kids, remembering that we only get a limited number of summers with them, and that even five or ten intentional minutes a day can matter as much as any destination.

We spent our days watching whales from the beach, playing cribbage, snorkeling with the girls, and taking my fisherman daughter Araylah out where we caught tuna and roosterfish, while a mom and baby whale played nearby, humbling us all. The older I get, the more awe I have for nature and the deep intelligence and connection woven through this world. Stepping away from the noise, slowing down, and simply being together was time incredibly well spent…and a reminder of what truly fills the tank!

That Moldy Smell in the Laundry Room Is a Warning Sign

A musty or moldy odor in the laundry room is easy to ignore, especially when life is busy, and the washing machine appears to be doing its job. Many people assume the smell is coming from damp clothes, a floor drain, or just normal humidity, but in many cases, the washing machine itself is the source.

The Hidden Problem With Popular Snacks in Modern Diets

Snacks play a significant role in modern diets, mainly because of how often they are consumed and what they are made of. For many households, snacks are no longer occasional fillers between meals but a daily source of calories, sometimes replacing real meals altogether. The challenge is that the snack industry has shifted heavily toward ultra-processed foods designed for convenience, long shelf life, and repeat consumption.

Why Neck Fragrance Matters More Than You Think

Fragrance is one of those everyday habits that rarely gets questioned, because it has been normalized for decades as part of being clean, attractive, or put together. A quick spray of cologne or perfume before heading out the door feels harmless, almost automatic. The problem is not the desire to smell good, but where and how these products are being used, especially when applied directly to the skin on the neck.

The Pillow You Sleep On Deserves More Attention

Sleep takes up roughly one-third of a person’s life, yet the products used during those hours are rarely examined with the same care as food, water, or supplements. A pillow sits directly under the face for six to eight hours every night, close to the nose, mouth, and brain, making it one of the most intimate health products in the home. During sleep, breathing is slower and deeper, and the body is focused on repair and detoxification, which means exposure to airborne chemicals can matter more than during waking hours. If a pillow is made with synthetic materials that off-gas or shed microplastics, that exposure can quietly happen night after night.

Non-Toxic Tip of the Week

8 Steps to remove stubborn mold from your washing machine:

  1. Empty the washer completely.

  2. Run a hot cycle with white vinegar. Pour 2 cups of white vinegar directly into the drum, then run the hottest, longest cycle your washer allows.

  3. Run a second hot cycle with baking soda. Once the vinegar cycle is done, sprinkle 1/2 to 1 cup of baking soda into the drum, then run another hot cycle.

  4. Clean the gasket and door area. Use a cloth or old toothbrush to scrub the rubber seal and door lip with hydrogen peroxide (3%) or a 50/50 vinegar and water mix, focusing on any dark spots or slimy buildup.

  5. Clean the detergent drawer. Remove the drawer if possible, rinse it well, then scrub with the same hydrogen peroxide or vinegar and water solution. Dry it before putting it back.

  6. Optional for stubborn mold. Add 5 to 10 drops of tea tree oil to your cleaning cloth or to a small bowl of vinegar and water, then wipe problem areas again. Avoid using tea tree oil if you have cats that may come into contact with the wet residue.

  7. Dry it out after every load. Leave the washer door open and the detergent tray cracked open so moisture can evaporate.

  8. Do this on a schedule. Repeat the full clean every 4 to 8 weeks, and sooner if you notice a musty smell returning.

Non-Toxic Recipe of the Week

Homemade Wool Dryer Balls

The laundry room is one of the most overlooked sources of daily chemical exposure. Detergents, fabric softeners, and dryer sheets leave residue behind that ends up on your clothes, towels, and bedding. Those fabrics sit against your skin for hours every day, and for many families, the exposure adds up quietly over time. The good news is that some of the most effective laundry upgrades are also the simplest. Homemade wool dryer balls are one of those upgrades. They replace disposable dryer sheets entirely, reduce static naturally, soften fabrics, and help clothes dry faster, all without fragrance, synthetic coatings, or chemical softeners. They are inexpensive to make, last for years, and once you try them, most people never go back. This guide walks you through exactly how to make your own wool dryer balls at home, why theywork, and how to use them safely and effectively.

This Week on Social Media, I talked about:

In Closing,

What we use in the laundry room shows up on our clothes, our skin, and in the air we breathe. Keeping things simple, dry, and low-toxic helps reduce unnecessary exposure without adding more work to your routine. A basic laundry room clean-out and a few smarter habits can make a meaningful difference over time.
