Hello Non-Toxic Friends!
The best soap at Costco is not what most people think. For years, Dove has positioned itself as a gentle, skin-loving brand, but its ingredient list tells a different story. Hidden within that familiar white bar are chemicals like titanium dioxide and synthetic fragrances that can be absorbed through your skin. These compounds have been linked to hormonal disruptions, headaches, and even fertility issues. That is far from the picture of softness the ads promise.
Fortunately, Costco offers a better choice. Dr. Bronner’s Castile Soap is made with real, recognizable ingredients like coconut oil, olive oil, palm oil, and hemp seed oil, all organic and natural. It nourishes your skin the way food nourishes your body, without leaving behind toxins. Even better, it is often sold at Costco for half the price you will find elsewhere.
Many soaps and body care products that appear clean on the surface contain hidden ingredients that can interfere with hormone function, irritate the skin, and affect overall health. Switching to products made with real, natural ingredients is one of the simplest ways to reduce your daily exposure to toxins and support your body’s natural balance.

The Best Soap on the Shelf Is Not Dove
Walk down the soap aisle in most grocery stores, and you’ll see shelves full of familiar brands, such as Dove, Olay, and Irish Spring, products that have been in homes for generations. They look clean, smell fresh, and promise moisture and softness. But if you’ve been trying to live a lower-toxin lifestyle, those promises start to fall apart once you look closer at the ingredients.
Stop Buying Bagged Shredded Cheese — Here’s Why
Shredded cheese might be one of those grocery staples you toss into your cart without thinking twice. It’s convenient, melts beautifully, and seems harmless enough, just cheese, right? Not exactly. If you’ve ever wondered why that bag of pre-shredded cheese lasts suspiciously long in your fridge, there’s a reason. And it’s not because it’s magically fresher than the block version. It’s because what’s inside that bag is rarely just cheese.
Mold at Home: The Hidden Threat and How to Detox Safely
Most people think of mold as something that grows on old bread or bathroom tiles. But the truth is, mold exposure is one of the most overlooked contributors to chronic health issues, and you might be exposed without even realizing it.
Rebounding: The Most Overlooked Exercise for Women’s Health
When people think about exercise for women’s health, the usual suspects are running, yoga, Pilates, or dance classes that promise toned muscles and better endurance. However, one form of movement is often overlooked, even though science shows it can be one of the most effective ways to build strength, support detoxification, and improve long-term health: rebounding.

Reading Body Care Labels
Most body care products are marketed as safe or “dermatologist approved,” but the fine print tells another story. When reading labels, skip the buzzwords and go straight to the ingredients list. A good rule of thumb is that if you can’t pronounce it or wouldn’t put it in your mouth, it doesn’t belong on your skin.

Here are ten ingredients to watch for and avoid:
Fragrance (Parfum) – a chemical cocktail linked to allergies and hormone disruption.
Phthalates – used to make scents last longer, but can interfere with reproductive health.
Parabens – synthetic preservatives that mimic estrogen. Sodium Lauryl
Sulfate (SLS) – a harsh foaming agent that strips natural oils.
Propylene Glycol – a common irritant used to help other chemicals penetrate skin.
Triclosan – an antibacterial linked to thyroid and liver toxicity.
Formaldehyde Releasers – preservatives that slowly release a known carcinogen.
Titanium Dioxide – can generate oxidative stress when absorbed or inhaled.
Polyethylene Glycol (PEGs) – may contain carcinogenic contaminants.
Synthetic Colors and Dyes – often derived from petroleum and tied to allergic reactions.
Your skin absorbs what you put on it every day. Reading labels carefully is one of the simplest ways to lower your toxic load and protect your health.
My Go-To Non-Toxic Body Wash
As a dad who’s gotten more careful about what goes on our family’s skin, I’ve been really impressed with Aleavia’s unscented body wash. It’s simple, made from just a few natural ingredients, and somehow still leaves skin clean and soft without that dry, tight feeling most soaps cause. I like that it uses prebiotics instead of harsh chemicals—feels like it actually helps the skin stay balanced rather than stripped. If you or your kids deal with sensitive skin, this one’s been worth keeping in our shower. |

Homemade Lavender Body Wash
Most commercial body washes that line store shelves are far from clean, even when labeled as “natural,” “gentle,” or “dermatologist-approved.” Many contain harsh surfactants, synthetic fragrances, and preservatives that can absorb through your skin and disrupt the delicate balance of your endocrine and immune systems. Ingredients like sodium lauryl sulfate, phthalates, parabens, and fragrance are among the most common offenders, often linked to irritation, hormonal imbalance, headaches, and even long-term toxicity.
The skin is the body’s largest organ, and what you put on it matters as much as what you eat. Your daily shower should leave you refreshed and nourished, not coated in synthetic chemicals. That is why making your own non-toxic, organic body wash is one of the simplest, most effective swaps you can make for better health. It takes only a few minutes to prepare and uses natural ingredients that cleanse and moisturize without stripping your skin’s protective barrier.
Before You Go…
Your skin is your largest organ, and it absorbs everything you put on your body. Dove soap may have that nostalgic smell, but that smell is harming your body at the cellular level. Instead, try my favorite products or even DIY with non-toxic ingredients. Be sure to try Tuula’s pumpkin-spiced latte recipe with LifeBoost Coffee, the perfect fall pick-me-up! Until next week,
Warren (Non-Toxic Dad)
