Non-Toxic Dad News: January 30, 2025

Hello Non-Toxic Friends!

Before you blend up that next protein shake, or spill it like I just did when I read this study, let’s talk about something that deserves your attention: contamination in protein powders.

A recent report uncovered that nearly half of the protein powders tested were tainted with heavy metals, hormone disruptors, and other toxins. That’s right—what you thought was fueling your health might be undermining it.

From plant-based options containing 3x more heavy metals than whey to BPA lurking in the packaging, it’s clear that not all protein powders are created equal. This week, we’re breaking down the report and sharing tips on how to meet your protein goals safely—without toxic surprises. But first…

Toxic Protein Powders: What to Know First

Protein powders are a staple for many people looking to meet their fitness goals, build muscle, or lose weight. They’re convenient, versatile, and marketed as a healthy solution for busy lifestyles. But recent studies, including a comprehensive report by the Clean Label Project, have uncovered alarming levels of contaminants in protein powders—enough to make you rethink that next post-workout shake

Are Powdered Electrolytes Safe?

Replenishing electrolytes is crucial for optimizing hydration, aiding muscle recovery, and boosting performance. But recent findings suggest that many of these products may do more harm than good. A review conducted by Mamavation tested 40 popular electrolyte mix brands and uncovered some alarming results. While these products promise to enhance your health, the truth is that many contain harmful ingredients that undermine their benefits.

Microplastics in Seafood: A Growing Concern

In January 2025, researchers from Portland State University released a groundbreaking study that confirmed what many had feared: microplastics have infiltrated virtually all of the seafood we consume.[1] This detailed investigation revealed that nearly all fish and shellfish sampled from the Oregon coast and local markets contained microplastic particles. These findings add to a growing body of evidence that microplastics, a pervasive environmental pollutant, are now deeply embedded in our food supply, particularly in marine life.

Non-Toxic Tip of the Week

Finding Clean Protein Sources

With so many brands of protein supplements facing scrutiny for contamination, is there a truly safe option? For now, the best approach is to be informed and selective:

Request Third-Party Testing Results – Reach out to any protein brand you're considering and ask for their testing reports. Make sure the levels they provide fall below CAprop65 heavy metal levels at a minimum (for adults this is the standard I look for) and if they fail to respond, consider it a red flag.

Choose Cleaner Protein Options – Whey or egg-based proteins ranked among the cleanest in recent studies.

Unfortunately, it’s hard to find clean “plant-based” protein powders. Even some that make the safe list may not have all organic ingredients. So be sure to read the label.

Focus on Whole Foods – Meet your protein goals with high-quality, organic whole foods whenever possible:

  • 100% grass-fed, grass-finished beef from regenerative farms.

  • 100% wild-caught salmon and other fish.

  • 100% free-range, cage-free chicken.

Take the extra step to ensure the protein you consume supports your goals without compromising your health.

It’s an easy way to get collagen-rich, bone broth protein without the hassle of sourcing bones and simmering them for 48 hours. Whether I’m blending it into an organic smoothie, stirring it into coffee, or adding it to gluten-free baked goods, it’s a simple, non-toxic way to fuel up with lean protein.
