Non-Toxic Dad News: Jan. 04, 2024

Hello Non-Toxic Friends!

Welcome to the Non-Toxic Dad Newsletter,

We already had enough to worry about with toxic chemicals all around us like glyphosate, PVC, and heavy metals…but now, there’s a new threat to your family’s health.

This week, I discussed a substance that might not be on everyone’s radar but is certainly worth discussing: Chlormequat Chloride.

Chlormequat Chloride is a plant growth regulator commonly used in agriculture to enhance crop robustness and yield. As a dad, understanding what goes into the food we provide for our families is crucial. In this issue, we aim to unravel Chlormequat Chloride - and it’s health implications, especially on children.

The worst part - this new toxic threat may become EPA-APPROVED “to provide farmers with an additional tool to help increase crop yield.”

This toxin is an agri-chemical linked to a wide array of developmental and health problems!

Furthermore, an EWG investigation found that chlormequat chloride has already been found in 11 out of the 13 oat-based products, such as children’s cereal, at levels deemed UNSAFE for child consumption!

Needless to say, the EPA needs to do better!

Non-Toxic Tip of the Week:

The holidays often leave us with a surplus of decorations, gift wrappings, and leftovers, which can challenge our non-toxic living goals. This week, let's focus on non-toxic and sustainable post-holiday practices:

  • Recycle with Care: Properly sort holiday items. Recycle cardboard, paper, and appropriate plastics. Remember, not all wrapping paper is recyclable, especially if it's metallic or glittery.

  • Donate and Reuse: Instead of throwing away gently used decorations or unwanted gifts, consider donating them to local charities or second-hand stores. Reusing items reduces waste and benefits those in need.

  • Compost Organic Waste: If you have a compost bin, use it for your organic holiday leftovers. Composting enriches soil, reduces landfill waste, and lowers greenhouse gas emissions.

  • Energy-Efficient Lights: If you use holiday lights, consider switching to LED lights next year for energy efficiency. Also, remember to unplug all decorations when not in use to save energy.

  • Mindful Disposal: Dispose of your Christmas tree responsibly. Many communities offer recycling programs that turn trees into mulch or wood chips for public use.

  • Plan for Next Year: Reflect on this holiday season and plan for a more non-toxic future. Consider toxin-free gifts, decorations, and practices for the next holiday season.

By incorporating these non-toxic practices into our post-holiday routine, we can enjoy the festive season responsibly while caring for our health.

Struggling with some post-holiday blues? Try my DIY Non-Toxic Mood-Lifting Scented Room Spray!

This DIY room spray combines natural, non-toxic ingredients with essential oils known for their mood-lifting properties. It's a perfect way to brighten up your space and lift your spirits without using harsh chemicals.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup distilled water

  • 2 tablespoons witch hazel or rubbing alcohol (acts as a dispersant for the oils)

  • 15 drops lavender essential oil (calming and relaxing)

OR

  • 15 drops orange or bergamot essential oil (uplifting and refreshing)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Spray Bottle: Ensure your spray bottle is clean and dry. A glass bottle is recommended as it doesn't react with essential oils and helps to preserve the fragrance.

  2. Combine Water and Witch Hazel: Pour the distilled water into the spray bottle, filling it about 90% of the way. Add the witch hazel or rubbing alcohol. This helps to disperse the essential oils throughout the water evenly.

  3. Add Essential Oils: Carefully add the essential oils to the bottle. Here's the breakdown:

    • Lavender: For a calming and relaxing aroma.

    • Orange/Bergamot: For a refreshing and mood-lifting scent.

  4. Shake Well: Secure the lid and shake the bottle vigorously for a few seconds. This helps to blend all the ingredients thoroughly.

  5. Label Your Spray: Label your DIY room spray so you remember the purpose and the date you made it.

  6. Usage: To use, simply shake the bottle gently before each use and lightly mist in the air. Avoid spraying directly on fabrics that may stain or on sensitive surfaces.

  7. Storage: Store your mood-lifting room spray in a cool, dark place to preserve the essential oils' therapeutic properties. It's best used within a month.

Tips:

  • Always do a patch test in an inconspicuous area to ensure the spray doesn’t leave stains.

  • You can adjust the essential oil quantities based on your preference, but keep the total drops of essential oil similar to maintain balance.

  • If you have pets, ensure the essential oils are safe around them.

This DIY room spray is an easy and natural way to enhance your environment, perfect for a quick mood lift or to create a relaxing atmosphere in your home. Enjoy the uplifting and refreshing aroma!
